As the traditional old industrial base in China, only 5% of counties/cities in Northeast China were in the list and no counties/cities from Heilongjiang Province and Jilin Province were shortlisted. Counties/cities from Liaoning Province in the list are all ranked after the 50th place with the average drop of over 30 places. The fall of Liaoning Province was mainly due to their bad performance in the industrial growth, profit margin and innovation.

The 2016 top 100 industrial counties/cities were distributed in over 18 provinces in China. Shandong Province has the most counties/cities (22) in the list, followed by Jiangsu Province, Zhejiang Province, Henan Province and Zhejiang Province. In terms of areas, the eastern cities were in the lead of the list, accounting for 67% of the total top 100 industrial counties/cities in China. Counties/cities from Jiangsu Province, Shandong Province and Zhejiang Province were quite dominant, accounting for 55% of the total 100 counties/cities and even 68% of the top 50.

Great changes took place in the top 100 list in 2016 compared to that in 2014. Only 5% of the counties/cities in Northeast China were ranked in the list while no counties/cities from Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province were shortlisted and counties/cities from Liaoning Province in the list are all ranked after the 50th place with the great drop in places, which showed the low competitiveness in the industrial areas in Northeast China. The performance of industrial infrastructure and operation in Northeast China were worse than that in other areas, especially the average operation performance of 40.3 in Northeast China was much lower that of 56 of the top 100 counties/cities, which indicated the low quality of industrial development and downward industrial pressure in Northeast China.

In additional, there are 31 top 100 counties/cities from Yangtze River Delta Economic Zone, 31 from Circum-Bohai Sea Economic Zone, and 10 from Economic Zone at Western Bank of Taiwan Straits. Yangtze Economic Zone was of great potential with 42% of the counties/cities ranking in the top 100 list. With 5.7 patents per 10,000 in Yangtze Economic Zone, it dominated in innovation in China. On the contrary, 1.5 patents per 10,000 in the Central Region of China and 0.5 patent per 10,000 in western China showed their weakness in innovation.
